Janel Curry,
Principal - NFP Practice
Grand Rapids, Michigan

Janel Curry is well known as a creative and thoughtful leader who publishes and speaks to a broad range of audiences throughout the world. She has been in faculty and leadership roles within the upper administration of higher education for over twenty-five years. Dr. Curry's speaking engagements and consultations have taken her across North America and abroad to such places as China and New Zealand.

As a Principal with OneAccord, Janel helps to relieve the revenue pain of institutions of higher education as well as non-profits focused on faith-based environmental stewardship. Central to her approach is the equipping of Administrators, faculty and NFP executives with the skills needed for aligning mission with incentive structures and reporting accountability, accompanied by the development of leadership and conflict management skills. She has developed strategic planning models, retreats, and workshops that facilitate the development of a strong institutional culture that enhances an institutional ability to obtain external funds. This expertise has led her to work and consult with a variety of colleges and universities related to institutional structures, accountability, and the incentives that cultivate the healthy development of Christian higher education. Recently she received a prestigious Fulbright Fellowship to serve as consultant to City University of Hong Kong for the spring semester of 2010, as it moves from a three to four year undergraduate degree.

As a specialist within higher education and the environmental movement, she has developed and facilitated creative collaborations among business, higher education, non-profits, and K-12 educational institutions. Fueled by her desire to see healthy and resilient organizations, her work is framed by her training in facilitation, conflict resolution, and executive management.

Over the last nine years, as Dean for Research and Scholarship, she shepherded the growth of Centers and Institutes at Calvin College from four to the current matrix of eleven. These range from the Van Lunen Center for Executive Management in K-12 Christian Schools to the Enterprise Center at Calvin College, a center focused on the commercialization of Intellectual Property. She has also managed the growth and success of faculty grantsmanship across the institution. A reflection of her leadership and insightfulness is evident in her most recent book Faithful Imagination in the Academy: Explorations in Religious Belief and Scholarship, a co-edited volume with Ron Wells.

She has been involved with numerous non-profits including the Mennonite Central Committee and ECHO. Dr. Curry has served as the chair of the board of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University and the Evangelical Environmental Network. She holds a PhD and Masters in Geography from the University of Minnesota, a Bachelor of Arts from Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and is a certified facilitator and mediator.
